Q. Why is magnesium included in Cal-Mag? Why is the ratio 2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium?

A. GNLD’s Chelated Cal-Mag is formulated with magnesium because magnesium is directly related to efficient calcium utilization. It consistently provides a high degree of purity in a form that tends to be more readily soluble to improve absorption by the body. It is important to know that bioavailability is not easily measured. The testing is involved, expensive, and in the case of radioactive measures, dangerous. GNLD uses both disintegration and dissolution testing to calculate bioavailability. This approach, which employs rigorous, standardized USP testing procedures, has been well correlated with bioavailability. The disintegration and dissolution of all GNLD’s calcium products has been shown to exceed the USP standard for dissolution time. Additionally, we routinely perform tablet dissolution and tablet disintegration tests as part of our quality control process. Q: I noticed that the new Chelated Cal-Mag with D tablet contains a different vitamin D source than the Chelated Cal-Mag with D capsule. Why is that and should I be concerned about optimal absorption and bioavailablity?

A: The vitamin D source for the Chelated Cal-Mag with D capsule comes from both fish liver oil and cholecalciferol. Both are a source of Vitamin D3, which is thought to be more than three times as effective as vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) in raising and maintaining vitamin D concentrations in the blood. Unlike the capsule, the tablet cannot support an oil-based ingredient so the product is made without fish liver oil. However, the cholecalciferol source alone is as highly absorbable, bioavailable and effective as fish liver oil and is an optimal source of vitamin D supplementation.

Q. Is there any difference in dissolution time between the capsules and tablets? Do Cal-Mag tablets have greater bioavailability than the capsules? If so, how much?

A. Any difference in bioavailability between Cal-Mag tablets and Cal-Mag capsules would be insignificant. Both products exceed the standard of 75% dissolution 30 minutes after ingestion. That standard insures that a product will be “bio-available” throughout its transit through the digestive tract.

Q. Do any of our products contain coral calcium? What is coral calcium exactly and how does it compare to our calcium products?

A. None of GNLD’s products contain Coral calcium. Coral calcium is not a source of calcium normally found inside the human food chain. There are also several safety issues, as some of the natural components of coral are toxic to humans.

Coral calcium is sourced from coral reefs. If sourced from living coral reefs, this poses a huge problem to the eco-system, as the world’s coral reefs contribute greatly to the earth’s well being in many aspects, from providing shorelines with protection by breaking waves, to regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.

Q. Is the best time to take calcium before sleeping or with food?

A. Calcium absorption is influenced by many factors, varying from one person (or even one day) to the next. If conditions are correct, calcium can be well absorbed both when taken with food and at bedtime. Nevertheless, there are a few general guidelines that may be helpful to ensure maximum calcium uptake by the body. First and foremost, the body must have sufficient levels of vitamin D in order to absorb calcium. Although vitamin D need not be taken in conjunction with calcium, a vitamin D deficiency will greatly diminish calcium absorption. GNLD also recommends taking calcium supplements (as with all of GNLD’s supplements) with meals, in small doses throughout the day, to better ensure maximum absorption. Studies have demonstrated that if large amounts of supplemental calcium are ingested in a single dose, the percentage of actual absorption by the body greatly diminishes. Therefore, it would be beneficial to take calcium supplements in small increments throughout the day.

Several factors can also interfere with calcium absorption. Certain foods containing oxalic acid such as spinach and Swiss chard can inhibit calcium absorption by binding with calcium and forming an insoluble compound. A diet high in saturated fat can also affect absorption. Fat binds with calcium and forms insoluble soaps. This process known as “saponification” also renders calcium insoluble; it is simply excreted through the digestive tract. Consequently, while there is no specific advantage to calcium absorption while sleeping, bedtime supplementation is a good way to avoid food combinations that may limit calcium absorption.

Lymphocyte proliferation response is how quickly, and many, lympocytes (T-cells) are produced once an invader is detected. Think of it as an army responding to attack. The amount of “soldiers” you get to the point of attack is prolific response.

T-cell proliferation is a measure of immune response effectiveness. T-cells coordinate immune defense and kill invaders on contact. Once the T-cells recognize an antigen, they are activated and rapidly multiply. They release lymphokines, which in turn activate more T-cells and B cells and direct them to the battle.

Natural killer (NK) cells are a specialized type of immune cell found in the spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow and blood that destroy abnormal cells such as virally infected cells, cancer cells and tumor cells. The NK cells do not proliferate in response to an antigen, as do the T-cells, nor are they increased by immunization. Natural killer cells are the first line of defense against cancer!

Of particular concern to the SAB was the idea of “transgenic” modification of DNA. This is the process of mixing genetic material not just from different species, but from different life forms. Plants were being given genes not just from other plants, but from bacteria, insects and animals. And the reverse was true. In order to determine the make-up of an “optimal serving” of fruits and vegetables containing carotenoids we first analyzed the overall consumption of fruits and vegetables across the United States, using data developed by the USDA. We singled out those fruits and vegetables that made the largest contribution of carotenoids to the average American diet: carrots, tomatoes, cantaloupe, spinach, orange juice, sweet potatoes, peaches, red bell peppers, broccoli, pumpkin, acorn squash, tangerine juice, pink grapefruit, apricots and strawberries. Q. Why doesn’t GNLD use wheat germ oil exclusively as the source for vitamin E in Vitamin E Plus?
A. The main ingredient in Vitamin E Plus is pure, unrefined wheat germ oil. However, if we used wheat germ oil alone, we could not achieve as high a level of vitamin E delivery. Therefore, we enrich the oil with a natural vitamin E complex from soybeans. This assures us of the complete vitamin E family of wheat germ oil plus the benefits of high natural vitamin E potency.

Q. Why does Vitamin E Plus provide 916% of the U.S. RDA? Is it safe to take so much vitamin E every day?
A. The U.S. RDA for vitamin E supplementation is solely based upon prevention of deficiency disease. However, we now know that vitamin E also has a strengthening effect upon the immune system and provides a powerful antioxidant function in the body, these factors to date have not been included in the U.S. RDA level for minimum adequate daily vitamin E intake. The potency of Vitamin E Plus addresses these additional health concerns in an effort to achieve an optimal level of this vital nutrient.

Research has shown that very high levels of vitamin E can be ingested every day for very long periods of time without any toxic symptoms. Nevertheless, we recommend that Vitamin E Plus be taken according to label directions.

Q. Will a diabetic person experience any negative effects when supplementing with Vitamin E Plus?
A. Supplementation with Vitamin E Plus will not be harmful to a diabetic. In fact, research has shown that vitamin E provides great benefits to diabetics. A balanced diet, abundant in vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional factors is essential to good health. However, diabetes is a serious medical condition for which, unfortunately, there is no known cure. Treatment requires a very carefully controlled diet, and for some patients, insulin injections. Because of the need for careful dietary control, your diabetic customers should discuss supplementation choices with their physician.

Q. Exactly how much apple pectin and lecithin is needed to make the miscibility in Vitamin E Plus work? I’m sensitive to these ingredients.
A. Since our water-miscible system is unique, we cannot disclose the amounts of lecithin and apple pectin contained within our product. But, we can tell you that you would find more lecithin in an egg yolk or a serving of corn than in a single capsule of Vitamin E Plus. With regard to pectin, a single capsule provides less pectin than what you would find in a quarter slice of apple.

Q. Why is GNLD’s Vitamin E Plus only 275 IU per capsule when the industry standard seems to be 400 IU?
A. Many manufactures who sell larger capsules often use a synthetic (which may be inferior in bioavailability) variety of vitamin E. Manufacturers are also required to list only the amount of alpha-tocopherol in their vitamin E products. GNLD gives you 275 IU of alpha-tocopherol, plus 50 mg of non-alpha tocopherols and tocotrienols (which include beta-, gamma-, and delta-compounds of each). All of these are derived from a natural, highly bioavailable source. For GNLD to offer 400 IU of alpha-tocopherol along with the additional tocopherols and tocotrienols in a natural form, the capsule would be much too large to swallow. In this case, less actually equals more!
